- This is a must have for anyone that has kids. An instant classic, the timely message, about a young girl that stands up for what she believes in will not be lost on young minds. A great way to have a conversation with your kids about standing up for their beliefs, even when everyone tells you your wrong. Beautiful art. My daughter loves this book!

- Great story and fantastic illustrations
- I heard the author interviewed and immediately wanted to find this book. It's as wonderful as I thought. Not only are the illustrations bright and kid friendly, they show the silliness of what some people wore in an earlier era and these people are upset because a girl is wearing pants! What a great message for all kids that show how some social conventions are just plain silly and that even if things get tough, it's important to stand up for your rights. But the book is not heavy handed. It's spot-on and completely relateable for kids and adults.
- Based on the real-life story of Mary Edwards Walker, who turned heads and drew ire when she dressed in pants mid-1800’s. This picture book shows a little girl of that time deciding to wear pants herself. The book firmly sets itself in the time period by explaining about societal expectations and the limitations that dresses placed on girls. The strong reaction of the townsfolk makes Mary question whether wearing pants is worth their anger. With her father’s support, she decides to continue wearing the clothes that make her happy. It turns out, she started a new trend!
Negley includes an author’s note that explains the story of the incredible Mary Edwards Walker who was also one of the first female doctors in the United States. The picture book focuses on gender expectations and how dressing as yourself is an important decision to make even if others in society don’t appreciate it. This is a strong statement for all youth and particularly for children who are gender nonconforming or transgender.
The art by Negley lifts the book into the modern era. Filled with bright colors and patterns, the illustrations have a great edge to them and a strong graphic quality. There is a playfulness to the illustrations that matches the tone of the book overall as well.
A great pick for discussions about gender expectations and clothing. Appropriate for ages 3-5. - Oh, the artwork, oh, the powerful messaging, oh, the informative Author’s note ….oh, how I love everything about this book!
MARY WEARS WHAT SHE WANTS shares the story of a young girl who shocked society by trading in her uncomfortable dress for a pair of pants. Despite the jeers from the townspeople, she continued to wear what she liked paving the way for other girls to have a choice in their own clothing.
There are so many incredible details in this book that make it a real standout! - It's hard to imagine a time when women and girls couldn't wear pants. This charming, hilarious, inspiring story brings us close to a little girl who helped pave the way for women everywhere - by boldly wearing pants, to the outrage of many. "Mary Wears What She Wants" spotlights an important woman, and it does so with great humor and great affect. Mary simply shines in yellow, in the midst of a blue-and-pink cast of nay-sayers, and it's a total joy when her frown at last turns upside down.
